Cricut Glossary
Here is a handy list of Cricut terms and meanings. This list will be continually updated.
Attach/Detach
Use Attach when you want items to stay together, and cut exactly that way on the cutting mat. If all of the items are not the same color, it will make them the same color.
Canvas
The design area in Design space
Cricut Access
Cricut subscription service. For a monthly fee, you get access to pre-designed projects, fonts, and images/design elements.
Design Space
The online software used to design projects and control your Cricut. The software on your computer works through your internet browser. You will have to install a plug in when you first set up your software. There is also an ios app and an android app, but there are different features in each of these.
Group/Ungroup
You can “Group” items together so you can move them around together on your canvas. They will not stay together when you go to make it. They will arrange themselves to use the least amount of material, and sort to different color mats.
Layers
Imagine that each item you add to your canvas is an actual sticker that you are sticking to an actual canvas to create a piece of art. As you add items to a design, each is in it’s own layer. The first item you add will be the bottom layer, and then next item will be layered above it, and so on. Each item you create in Design Space is in it’s own “layer”. You can tell if an item is above or below another item by trying to move one item on top another. Whichever item you can still see, is above the other. You can move them up and down by using “Arrange”.
Slice
This will cut out the item on the uppermost layer, from the item on lowest layer.
Templates
Background pictures that you can add to your Canvas in order to help you visualize your design. There’s a wide variety, from T-shirts to a Dishwasher. You can change the color and size of the templates to suit your needs. (The template don’t appear on the mats when you click make it.) Tip: If/When you want to remove a template from a project, click once on the template on the right sidebar, and then click delete and it will remove it from the canvas. You may have to scroll back up to the top left and zoom back in after you remove it.
Weld
This will merge two items together to make them one item
