Creating a Shamrock in Design Space
Designing with Design Space
Cricut’s Design Space is the most user friendly interface for craft die cutting machines in my opinion. They have made it pretty easy by creating a whole library of pre-made designs that are just a click away.
However, I don’t like being tied down to a subscription service. And I really enjoy designing my own unique designs. This is the reason that I eventually purchased a Brother Scan N Cut and a Silhouette Cameo 3. But I still LOVE my Cricut (I just recently upgraded to a Maker from an Explore One).
I have been in the process of doing a deep dive into everything Cricut, starting with Design Space. And what I have discovered is that it is possible to design using only Design Space. Here is a step by step tutorial to create a shamrock.
This is a great way for beginners to practice using Design Space. This tutorial is also great for more seasoned Cricut users who want to learn ways to make original designs.
If you are unsure of any of the terms that are being used, see my Cricut Glossary post.
Skills practiced in this tutorial
If you are fairly new to Cricut and Design Space, here are the skills that you will learn and practice in this tutorial:
Inserting shapes
Changing sizes of shapes
Moving objects around on the Canvas
Rotating Shapes
Slice
Weld
Creating the leaves
1. Click Shapes (on the left side) and insert a heart.
2. (Optional) Change the color of the heart to Green, by clicking on the square between the Line type and the fill drop down boxes, and then clicking on the green square.
2. Unlock the dimensions by clicking the lock on the top menu, or click on the lock on the bottom left corner of the heart.
3. Change the size of both the Height and Width to 3” on the top menu.
4. Make two copies of the heart by clicking on the duplicate button on the right side menu.
5. Select the original heart, and change the X Position to 1.5, and the Y Position to 0 (on the top menu).
6. Select one of the other hearts, and rotate to 270 degrees.
7. Move it to X position 0, Y Position 1.5.
8. Select the last heart, and rotate it 90 degrees.
9. Move it to X position 3, Y position 1.5
10. Click Select All, and then Weld (Right Side Menu, Bottom).
Creating the Stem
11. To make the stem, First, insert a heart.
12. Change the width to 3.5.
13. Change the X position to 9, and the Y position to 2.25.
14. Insert a circle.
15. Change the width of the circle to 5″.
16. With the circle still selected, change the X position to 7, and the Y position to 0.
17. Select both the heart and the circle, and click Slice (Right side menu, at the bottom)
18. The only part that you want to keep is the bottom most slice of the heart. Delete all the rest.
To position the stem, there isn’t a set way to position it. You are just going to place it where you think it looks the best.
19. Take your stem and place it on the shamrock that you made with the hearts. (Click and drag)
20. Rotate it by clicking and dragging the rotate icon on the top right corner of the stem when it is selected. It looks like this:
21. When you like the position of the stem, select the two pieces by either:
a. Click Select All, since those should be the only two pieces left, or
b. selecting the heart leaves, and then holding the shift key while selecting the stem
22. Click Weld.
